Yellow rice with raisins in a bowl

Classic Yellow Rice loaded with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties

South African Yellow Rice brightens any plate and perfectly complements rich dishes like Bobotie. Golden, fragrant, and subtly sweet – it is known locally as geelrys. This cheerful side dish fills every meal with warmth, nostalgia, and the comforting aroma of turmeric, cinnamon, and raisins.

Rooted in Cape Malay cuisine, Yellow Rice reflects the vibrant flavours that shaped South African cooking. Early settlers introduced aromatic spices, and generations of families turned this simple dish into a favourite for Sunday lunches, festive feasts, and gatherings. Traditionally served with Bobotie, curries, and roasted meats, it adds both colour and a delightful balance of flavour.

The beauty of this rice lies in its simplicity and versatility. Gently simmer long-grain rice with turmeric or saffron for that golden hue, add a touch of sugar for sweetness, and drop in a cinnamon stick for warmth. The result is a soft, aromatic dish that wins over adults and children alike. Learn more about the health benefits of turmeric.

At The Healthy Springbok, we craft a light, wholesome version using minimal sugar and optional raisins. This keeps the authentic flavour intact while making it perfect for everyday, health-conscious meals.

Serve it alongside a comforting Bobotie, a spicy curry, or a platter of grilled vegetables. Let its heavenly aroma fill your kitchen.

A humble dish with deep roots is proof that the most memorable recipes are the ones lovingly shared from one generation to the next.
