Tomato and Onion Relished served with boerewors

Love the Unique and simple yet juicy and saucy

Boerewors with Tomato and Onion Relish – A Braai Classic

Few dishes reflect the spirit of a South African braai as well as Boerewors served with a warm Tomato and Onion Relish. This combination is simple, flavourful, and familiar to many households. It delivers comfort, bold aromas, and a sense of tradition that keeps people coming back for more. Whether shared at a weekend braai, enjoyed at a family gathering, or prepared for a quick dinner, this dish always feels like home.

Boerewors, with its distinctive spice blend, remains a favourite across the country. It grills beautifully, and as it cooks, the aroma draws everyone closer to the fire. Its texture is hearty, and its savoury flavour pairs perfectly with something fresh and tangy. That is where the classic Tomato and Onion Relish comes in. Made from slow-cooked onions, ripe tomatoes, and gentle seasoning, the relish adds brightness to the dish. It balances the richness of the boerewors while enhancing every bite.

Over the years, this pairing has been enjoyed in many forms. Some prefer the relish smooth and saucy, while others like it chunky with a bit of heat. Either way, it transforms a simple plate of wors into a complete and satisfying meal. It can be served with pap, on fresh rolls, or alongside salads, making it versatile and easy to adapt.

At The Healthy Springbok, we celebrate this traditional favourite while keeping it fresh and wholesome. Leaner varieties of boerewors, plenty of vegetables in the relish, and mindful cooking methods help create a lighter version that still honours the dish’s roots.

From the sizzling sound of wors on the grill to the comforting aroma of simmering tomatoes and onions, Boerewors with Tomato and Onion Relish remains a timeless South African classic — warm, inviting, and always ready to share.
